Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for an extended period when numerous of them entered the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations impacting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend passed through the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that such operations become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
