Individuals who endured abuse by church officials have voiced renewed hope after their initial encounter with the new Pope at the Holy See.

Gemma Hickey, who leads the anti-abuse organization, commented that the Pope's decision to meet with them so early in his papacy sent a strong message about his dedication to addressing the issue.

Worldwide Zero-Tolerance Policy Advocated

The organization is pushing for a worldwide strict approach that would defrock any clergy member who confesses to or is proven of sexually abusing a child. This approach has already been adopted in the US.

The Pontiff recognized that there is "opposition in some parts of the world" to this initiative, according to Hickey.

"Everyone was practical when we recognized that there is resistance," they stated.

Inherited Issue

The new Pope, who assumed the position in May, has taken on this longstanding issue that has haunted the Church for decades.

Previous efforts to address the problem included an unprecedented summit on paedophilia within the institution and revisions to church laws to explicitly criminalize sexual abuse.

Deeply Felt Connection

For Hickey, who uses they/them pronouns, the campaign for worldwide adoption of the policy is personal. The Canadian advocate revealed they were abused by a priest who was subsequently moved between different parishes.

"Hopefully this will set the tone for his papacy, because we aim to collaborate with him," they expressed. "We have the common objective, we want to end clergy abuse."

Significant Encounter

Multiple members of the coalition, which includes victims and advocates from more than 30 countries, engaged with the Pope in his Vatican office.

The discussion, initially planned for 20 minutes, lasted to a full hour, during which the Pope "primarily heard to us," according to the representative.

The Pope was described as "very understanding" when hearing the story of a female survivor victimized at a Catholic residential school for Indigenous children in North America.

They added the Pope was "tender" about their personal experience and seemed "modest, humorous, and approachable."

"Survivors have long wanted a seat at the table and I didn't perceive like he was giving us lip service," they commented. "I felt like he was genuine, practical, and receptive and eager to work with us."

Canon Law Reforms

The organization is hoping that revisions to canon law will facilitate the adoption of the strict approach worldwide.

They have spoken with specialists and compiled documents that they plan to present to the pontiff.

"He appeared interested in reviewing it," they remarked.

Responsibility Highlighted

A recent Vatican-commissioned document highlighted the "necessity of a streamlined protocol for the stepping down and/or removal of religious officials or personnel in cases of abuse or failure to act."

The report also noted that victims consistently emphasized the "critical requirement for bishops and senior officials to be held accountable for inaction and cover-up."

Path Ahead

Hickey shared they informed the Pope at the beginning of their meeting: "This represents as much a challenge for him to engage in a dialogue as it was for us."

Following the encounter, Hickey expressed optimism for future change.

"We realise it's not something that's going to be resolved quickly, but at the end of the day, uniting and building a connection and persisting to strengthen that bond is a step in the right direction," they stated.

They concluded that they shared with Pope Leo: "Even though it's a dark chapter, I believe like we can change how the story ends - he valued that."
